The Dog Whisperer

My daughter Abby has always loved dogs.

My friend Argee’s dog, Rumi, a Chow-chow.

Whenever we chance upon some dog being walked — be it in the park or at the mall — she would always run to them and ask their owners if she could “hug” them.

Surprisingly, these lovable canines, almost always, took to liking her — even at first encounter! Love at first sight, we adults call it.

Unfortunately, the condominium building we live in has a very strict “No Pets” policy for its tenants. This has caused me a great problem in explaining to my three-year old why she cannot own a dog… while her friend from the other building can have a Japanese Spitz. It always breaks my heart each time I tell her, “… time to leave the dog alone now, honey”… and every time, she would look up to me with longing in her eyes, as if saying, “Why can’t I have one, dad?”

Three weeks before Christmas, at bedtime, I heard her pray: “Dear Santa Jesus, can I be Rumi’s big sister?”

Rumi is my friend Argee’s pet chow-chow, which Abby really, really adored. She even named her stuffed toy dog Ruma.

So, I did what any loving father would do: I played Santa to my angel.

DSC_8486I know it’s not the one she prayed for, but the joy in her eyes when she hugged “Potchi” made me forget that what I gave her wasn’t the real thing. Well, given the restrictions at our building, this cuddly toy would do in the mean time.

Merry Christmas!

My sense of humor can be keen, sarcastic, silly or corny -- sometimes all at once. I enjoy meeting new people with no preconceived ideas about what or what is not possible. You get much more out of life by being open minded and willing. I'm an easy going, good-natured person who loves life and loves people. I'm both optimistic and realistic and pretty objective when it comes to assessing situations, events, etc. In general I am a very positive person and you'll usually find we with a smile on my face.
