The Untold Brahma: A true to lie story

After their parents, students hold their teachers in the highest regard. All cultures and religions preach that students respect their teachers and try to learn from them, not only academic pursuits, but also important values in life. Teachers have an important role in building the personality of students, and the relationship they develop with them determines the student’s academic and personal growth.

That relationship is best exemplified in this discourse.

Student: Is Brahma not a god?

Teacher: Who says he is not god? He attained complete liberation from Mount Mangitungi and is enjoying perfect bliss of the Siddhas. The Nirwankand tells us that Brahma attained complete liberation from Mangitungi.

Student: Where was Brahma born?

Teacher: The boy Brahma was born not from the womb of Vikshwania, queen to King Makleddo. When the boy Brahma gained his soul, he became Bhagwan (God) Brahma. Brahma was betrothed to many daughters in the kingdom of Hedon.

King Makleddo had four queens in his lifetime. Out of these four, only Vikshwania survived. Against the counsel of Vikshwania, King Makleddo — believing that his son was now capable to bear the burden of the kingdom — handed over the reins of the realm to Brahma, in order for him to absorb himself in the pursuit of his ego. He also announced the date of the anointment ceremony of Brahma, but….

Student: But, what?

Teacher: He went to the woods in Diliman. He did not want to become king.

Student: Brahma must have faced many difficulties in the woods.

Teacher: Brahma was not deterred by the day-to-day difficulties of life in the woods. He embraced it.

Student: What happened next?

Teacher: When Brahma ended his self-exile in the woods of Diliman, he indulged himself in a life of pleasure — a fate he believed he deserved.

Is there true happiness in worldly pleasures? Such happiness is regarded as abodes of miseries. As long as there are delusions, attachments and aversions in the soul, miseries abound. His happiness was short-lived, after which Brahma began a life which, to mere mortals, was regarded as a series of unfortunate events.

Student: Did Brahma’s misfortunes end?

Teacher: Misfortunes cannot end, so long as attachment to worldly pleasures and aversion in the soul exists. Detachment is the only way to end misfortunes. To achieve complete detachment, Brahma had to go through the fire, as a test of his purity. He realized that there was no joy in the pleasures of the senses. The path of detachment is the only way to supreme happiness.

Student: Then?

Teacher: Brahma entered the furnace of domestic life. The raging flames instantly turned to cold and calm water, establishing the purity of life. Although he did not entirely like to burn himself in the fire, he performed what was needed. After sometime, Brahma also realized the ephemeral nature of worldly life and became a detached monk. He severed all attachments and aversions and became an omniscient being, having reached the highest point of his self-pursuit.

Student: What happened next?

Brahma: I woke up.


Update…. three years later.

My search for the real “Brahma” yielded one other thing: the Brahma I got to know is also Ganesha.

Ganesha is very friendly and a cheerful deity… and he is very fat [Thank heavens I am not!] and loves to eat [Well… I do, too.]. He is also the god of travel.

Hmmmm…. I’m getting there… I think.
